Artful lodgers

Displaying art is an art in itself. 
With these handy tips from industry experts, you'll soon get the hang of it, writes Georgia Madden.

Dealing with tricky areas

"If you're hanging a painting in a stairwell, position it so you can catch a glimpse from below, even if it's just a corner," advises Jonathon Lee, art consultant and owner of The Hangman. 

"It draws people's eyes upwards and makes them feel as though they're moving towards something. 

​Creating personality

"If you have a long hallway, run several photos in different shapes and sizes, all lined up right along the wall," says Lee. 

"Start with the largest to set the height, centring the other pictures off that."

Combining the old with the new

"Mixing old and new frames works particularly well when you're creating a family photo wall," says Lee. "The more shapes, the better, and all the different finishes. 

​For a styled effect, stick with black and white photos. For a more homely look, mix in colour photos." 

Start with the picture you want at the bottom of the arrangement, then hang those at the far sides, and finally the one at the highest point.

"I find putting portrait-shaped frames at the top and bottom gives the arrangement balance."


Perfect pairing

"If you're hanging two or three paintings, don't mix oil with watercolour - it simply doesn't work," says Lee.

"You can start to mix the two more successfully with groupings of six or eight paintings," says Lee.

​Keeping an open mind

Bookshelves, bathrooms, around the television or behind a desk... With a little forethought, all can be great places to display art.

"I love leaning a painting​ on a bookshelf and surrounding it with books. It's a touch of the unexpected and can really give a room personality," says Lee.
